The benefits of our projects are outstanding. 1) They provide jobs to our family members who otherwise can't get work, 2) They greatly contribute to better community health (food and hygiene practices), and 3) Provide wrap-around care for the families and children at Hope Shines.
"Kiza" Soap Making:
Clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene are some of the most important factors in improving family health in Rwanda. Hand washing is a simple act that can reduce the presence of harmful bacteria by 92%.
Kiza, which means "to save" and "to build wealth" is our project at the forefront of improving hygiene in Rwanda. We partner with hotels around Rwanda and collect their discarded hotel soap left behind by guests. The soap is then taken to our processing center where it is washed and scrubbed in safe sanitizers, shaven down to fine particles, then re-formed in a forming press, and then finally packaged for local distribution.
Chicken Eggs Production:
This project resides right on the center property. We care for over 30 vegetarian fed chickens at our coop and use the eggs produced to either sell to market or in the meals served during our after-school program. Family members care for the chickens and even learn business skills by selling the eggs to market daily.
