Parent Vocational Skills Training

In 2020, Hope Shines decided to use the parent-led savings group platform to initiate a basket weaving & business training in which basic weaving techniques were taught along with basic business skills. The training was intended to develop skills of the parents that would translate to greater opportunities, both financial and personal.

Although the training proved to benefit the families by helping them develop these skills, the existence of poverty within the families remained, both before and after the training. The impact of Covid and inflation on the global economy, specifically in Rwanda, created unforeseen issues and the parents were not able to fully put their newly learned skill to use. However, the initial training has motivated the parents to want to continue to educate themselves and find additional ways to earn a living. For this reason, refresher training and further skills development is needed to help this group to thrive and make a livable wage.

Proposed Solution
We met with this group over a period of time to better understand what skills they want/need to help them advance and get back on track.

As the world slowly returns to “normal”, and the tourism industry improves in Rwanda, we determined that now is the time to build upon the previous skills training for our parents through a second more enhanced training. This additional training will be more advanced in the art of weaving, which will include developing new products to new markets as well as training the weavers in the business skills needed to be successful.

Implementation of the training will consist of 3 focus areas and occur over a period of 12 weeks. Focus Area 1: Advanced weaving techniques, Focus Area 2: Business and product training, Focus Area 3: Starter kit and follow up training.

The training is projected to start in March. We've secured a HUGE generous donation of $5,000 towards the total needed of $8,100. So, we need YOUR help in raising the additional $3,100 to make this happen!
